Therion (formerly Blitzkrieg and Megatherion) is a Swedish symphonic metal band formed in 1987 by Christofer Johnsson. The band's name comes from Celtic Frost's album To Mega Therion. In Greek, "Τὸ Μέγα Θηρίον" (To Mega Thērion) means "Great Beast". While the band started out playing death metal style music, over time the band incorporated elements such as choirs, classical musicians, and even a symphony orchestra in some of their concerts and became one of the pioneers of the symphonic metal style. Therion's lyrics are based on various mythologies and practices such as occultism and magic, ancient traditions and scriptures. Released on December 15, 2023, their album Leviathan III includes the song Ruler of Tamag, about the Turkish mythology god Erlik Khan and his sons Karash Khan, Shingai Khan and Tamag.
