Oktoberfest is a two-week festival held in Munich, Germany every year in the last days of September and the first days of October. Attended by approximately 6 million people every year, this festival is the most famous event of the city of Munich. Modelled after the original event in Munich, Oktoberfest is also celebrated in other cities around the world. The festival traditionally lasts 16 days, including the first Sunday in October. After the unification of the German states, changes were made to the festival programme, and if the first Sunday in October falls on the 1st or 2nd day of the month, the duration of the festival was extended to the 3rd day of the month, i.e. the 3rd day of unification celebrations of the Day from Germany. The festival takes place at a place called Theresienwiese (Therese Field), often called "d'Wiesn" or "d'Waasn" in German. The highlight of the festival is beer, and each year the celebration of the festival begins with a ceremony in which the mayor of Munich lights a fountain in a large wooden beer barrel, an action the Germans describe as "O'zapft is!" (Bavarian: "There was a fountain!"). Oktoberfest beer, which is slightly dark and strong in both taste and alcohol, is specially brewed for these celebrations. This beer is served in special one-litre glasses called Maß, and the first Maß is served to the President of Bavaria. Only Munich breweries are allowed to serve this special beer and it is produced in huge Bierzelt tents that can accommodate thousands of people. The history of the festival begins in 1810. Kronprinz Ludwig (1786-1868), later King Ludwig I (reign: 1825-1848), married Princess Theresa of Saxe-Hildburghausen on 12 October 1810. The people of Munich were invited to a party organised in the fields outside the city gates to celebrate the royal day. In 1811 a show was added to promote Bavarian agriculture. In 1818 carnival stalls appeared; the main prizes were silver, china and jewellery. In 1819 the fathers of the city took responsibility for organising the festival and it was decided that Oktoberfest would become an annual event.
