Kalkandelen Football Club was founded as a professional club in 1979. In 1981 KF Shkëndija Tetovë was closed down by the communist government for being too Albanian in orientation. In the first season after the reform in 1992-93, Shkëndija started again from scratch, but with great enthusiasm, strict organization and great joy for the Albanian people. The club started the competition in the lowest league, the municipal league, and became champion with great faith. Shkëndija was promoted to the third league as champion. In the 2003/2004 season the club was reorganized and moved from KF Shkëndija HB to KF Shkëndija '79 and after this season it returned to the first league, where it struggles to this day. In November 2004 Shkëndija celebrated its 25th anniversary, where in honor of the 25th anniversary a match between Shkëndija veterans was held at the city stadium.
